How to choose an activation metric

An activation metric should represent a user receiving the product’s core value, not merely finishing setup. Start with a concrete outcome such as creating a first project, sending a first invoice, or completing a first workout. Then compare the later retention of users who reached that event against those who did not. If the gap is meaningful and repeatable, you have a candidate activation metric worth tracking.
