Mobile App Conversion Tracking: Installs, Activation and Purchases
A mobile conversion is not one event. Model the path from acquisition to first value and payment so you can see where growth is actually constrained.
Choose conversions that represent value
An install shows that acquisition worked. It does not show that the product did. Track the moments that progressively reduce uncertainty about customer value: account creation, onboarding completion, a first meaningful product action, trial start and purchase.
The exact milestones depend on the product. A budgeting app may activate when the first account is connected; a collaboration app when the first teammate contributes; a developer tool when the first successful deployment completes.
Build one journey from anonymous to identified
Campaign context often exists before identity. Start the journey anonymously, retain source and install attribution, then associate it with the known user at signup. If your identify call creates an unrelated profile, the conversion report loses the link to acquisition.
The minimum useful sequence is:
ad_or_referral
first_open
account_created
onboarding_completed
activation_event
purchase
Measure the transition, not just the total
For every step, calculate conversion from the preceding step and from the beginning of the funnel. A 40% overall completion rate may hide one transition losing half the cohort while the rest perform well.
Break the weak transition down by platform, app version and acquisition source. Then inspect the journeys immediately before exit. That sequence separates a campaign-quality problem from a product or release problem.
Connect payments and revenue
Use client or server purchase events, or connect a billing provider such as Stripe, RevenueCat, Paddle or Lemon Squeezy. The purchaser should resolve to the same user identity used in the product funnel.
Once revenue is present, compare:
- cost per install;
- cost per completed onboarding;
- cost per activated user;
- cost per purchaser;
- revenue and payback by channel or campaign.
Add attribution context
For Apple Search Ads, preserve campaign and keyword attribution. For Google Ads, retain Play Install Referrer data or web click identifiers and UTMs. For other channels, use consistent source, medium and campaign values.
The complete acquisition model is covered in mobile ad attribution, with platform differences in Apple vs Google app install attribution.
Validate before making budget decisions
Check that conversion events fire once, identity merges as intended, campaign fields survive signup and payments resolve to the expected users. Keep an unattributed group visible; an implausible 100% attribution rate often indicates that later campaign properties are overwriting the original source.
Then establish a baseline window and wait for enough users. Compare cohorts using the same conversion definition and avoid optimising a campaign from a handful of purchasers.
Turn conversion tracking into an improvement loop
The report should end in a testable next step. Identify the largest meaningful loss, isolate the cohort, form one hypothesis, ship one change and compare matched versions afterward. An agentic analytics workflow can run that investigation consistently while leaving product changes and ad spend behind human approval.
